A Look Inside A Leading Copper Wire Manufacturing Facility
A Behind-the-Scenes Look Inside One of North America’s Leading Copper Wire Manufacturing Facilities
When most people think about copper wire, they picture a finished product, which is a reel of conductor ready to power a building, connect critical infrastructure, or support the next generation of technology.
What they don’t see are the people responsible for the engineering, craftsmanship, and precision that goes into manufacturing every foot of wire. Founded in 1929 as Camden Wire, International Wire’s Camden, NY facility is still the foundation of a wire fabrication legacy that spans nearly a century, where manufacturing expertise meets modern process control to produce copper conductors for some of the world’s most demanding industries.
Manufacturing at Scale
At 326,000 square feet across two floors of manufacturing, Camden is International Wire’s largest plant, one of nine facilities the company operates across New York State.
Thousands of pounds of copper move continuously through the facility, traveling at speeds of up to 5,000 feet per minute, from one specialized process to the next. Altogether, the plant manufactures and ships millions of pounds of wire a month.
All machines have a specific purpose, they’re all working to produce consistent, high-quality conductors that meet exact customer specifications. In this manufacturing plant, “a ½ pound of copper can be drawn to 17 miles of 44 AWG copper wire,” says Tony Torzon, Vice President of Manufacturing at International Wire. This level of precision takes a series of tightly controlled processes, each one engineered to hit the next spec exactly.
Every Process Has a Purpose
As copper moves through the facility, it passes through multiple stages of manufacturing, each designed to improve a specific characteristic. Depending on the product being manufactured, copper may be:
- Drawn to precise diameters
- Annealed for improved flexibility
- Stranded for greater mechanical strength
- Plated for corrosion resistance or specialized applications
- Continuously monitored for dimensional accuracy
Built for Demanding Industries
The products manufactured at International Wire will eventually serve a wide range of industries where reliability is critical, including:
- Electrification & Power Infrastructure
- Data Centers & Critical Connectivity
- Advanced Manufacturing & Automation
- Built Environment & Critical Infrastructure
- Transportation & E-Mobility
Each application places a unique demand on the conductor and meeting that demand requires our experienced engineers and machine operators, who know these products inside and out and know exactly how to manufacture them to meet each application’s performance requirements.
Quality Built into Every Stage of Production
At the Camden, NY facility, International Wire’s operators combine hands-on experience with real-time technology to monitor:
- Wire diameter
- Tension
- Surface condition
- Production speed
- Equipment performance
The facility is ISO 9001 certified, and finished products are verified through comprehensive lab testing to ensure every shipment meets customer specifications as well as industry standards. The combination of in-process monitoring by our team members and final inspection helps deliver consistent performance across every production run.
Every operator, engineer, and technician understands how their role contributes to the final product. Decades of experience, attention to detail, and pride in craftsmanship are evident throughout the facility, and no matter what industry our products end up in, the goal is always to manufacture products customers can depend on every day.
Camden employs approximately 140 people, with a workforce that is nearly evenly split between long-tenured employees and newer team members. Some team members have 40+ years on the floor; others are just being brought on, merging institutional knowledge and fresh perspective working side by side.
